Ribcap at the Canadian Fall Prevention Conference 2025

Ribcap joined the 2025 Canadian Fall Prevention Conference in Toronto, leading a workshop on adaptive clothing and injury prevention. Discover key insights, innovations, and our commitment to safer, more inclusive care.

The 6th Canadian Fall Prevention Conference by Parachute was held on April 9-10 in Toronto. It is a prestigious event where healthcare professionals, researchers, and innovators come together to exchange ideas and solutions on fall prevention. Ribcap was proud not only to be present, but also to make an active contribution by leading a workshop. Our CEO, Nico De Wilde, gave a fascinating workshop on how adaptive clothing and intelligent protective equipment can help reduce fall-related trauma.

The importance of this conference

  •
Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among vulnerable populations, including seniors and people with neurological conditions. The conference is about sharing knowledge, presenting research, and highlighting innovation, all with one goal in mind: preventing falls and improving quality of life. For Ribcap, whose mission is to combine protection, comfort, and style, this fits perfectly with what we stand for.

Our Contribution: Workshop by Nico, Amy and Patricia

  •
Together with Amy Hester and Patricia Quigley, Nico presented an informative workshop for more than 100 people. They highlighted how innovative technology and adaptive clothing such as Ribcap head protection can help reduce fall-related trauma. They focused on injury prevention, especially:
  •
  • 1. How technologies like performance mats and Ribcap headgear enhance safety in healthcare settings.
  • 2. Training programs for healthcare staff to improve the use of adaptive clothing and protective equipment.
  • 3. Tailor technology solutions for specific patient needs and enhance fall prevention.
  •
The session led to great conversations about collaboration, design, and the future of inclusive protection.

Key Learnings

  •
In addition to the workshop, the event was a rich source of inspiration. From practical fall prevention strategies in nursing homes to new data on fall incidents, we came away with new insights that will shape our future innovations.

We also visited 14 research laboratories dedicated to testing and preventing falls, each with a focus on areas that are crucial to Ribcap's mission. Highlights include:
  •
  • - CareLab: a simulated hospital environment designed for testing healthcare technologies in practice, replicating a standard single-patient hospital room.
  • - FallsLab: focused on understanding balance and walking behavior, developing therapies for individuals at risk of falling, and designing technologies to prevent or reduce falls and related injuries.
  • - HomeLab: dedicated to researching solutions that help older adults and individuals with disabilities live safely and independently in their own homes.
  •

During the Fall Conference, we had the opportunity to learn from some of the leading professionals in healthcare and injury prevention. Featured speakers include:
  •
  • - Richard Louis: Provincial Injury Prevention Specialist
  • - Danielle Bouchard: Associate Professor at the University of New Brunswick
  • - Karim Khan: Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health & Arthritis
